The solace of cats (and solace is a really nice word)

Another bad night. Awake at 4 o'clock and I gave up trying to sleep at five. I've had comfortable breakfast in bed - pot of tea, yoghurt & museli and blueberries & and apple cut into wedges. Apple was from veggie bag - I want to go back to the store & see if they have any more because it was delicious, and it's an odd time of year for good apples. (Also want to know the type because I don't recognise it.) Now noodling around on ipad & reading tumblr. Cat has come in and has made himself into a little white cat loaf next to me. It's daylight outside but I'm too comfortable to get up & pull open the curtains. I'll start work soon. Crossfit may or may not happen - I'm going to put on my exercise clothes, but not going to beat myself up if I don't go.

I wonder if solace and soothe come from the same roots

I have just spent a happy 10 minutes looking this up (I can never stop with just one word - too interesting). Basically - no. Solace from the french, and soothe from an old English word for truth (soothsayer has the same root). Soothe got its current meaning (to calm, appease, pacify) sometime mid 18th century. And thankyou! I had forgotten how much I like dictionaries.
